The New Stairs

The stairs after removing the carpet....

And the stairs now...
all broken treads replaced and finished! This portion of the stairs cost $35 for maple wood with some polyurethene finish.

  • Hi Kim! I've been having a great time reading your blog! When I got to this entry about the stairs, I just had to stop and ask just how you accomplished this task! They look incredible! We not only have the same type of stairs (walls on both sides, no openings), we also have the exact same scenario; treads of all different sizes and condition. And did it really only cost $35 to replace all those?

    Awesome job!!

  • There are 3 at the very top that are oak and were purchased at a big box store for $20-25 each (can't remember)so I think they add quite the premium to cut and round off the front edge. The rest were cut to fit and the front rounded off. There is a carpenter with really odd hours who doesn't answer his phone who sells fabulous wood at unbelievable prices. Of course, he's also supposed to be producing the countertop which has yet to materialize after 2 (or is it 3?) months! If you need something right away, forget it but when he does have something it's quite a steal!
